UN CSD-16 Planning

A working group to explore the possibilities of "inside" or "outside" involvement in the United Nation's Commission on Sustainable Development review cycle in NYC, May 5-16, 2006.

Group members

Ryan, New School

Sam, Sarah Lawrence College

Annie, NYU (I know I'm going to California, but I could come back in May!)

Shane, NYU

Filing cabinet:

"Major groups' priorities for action in energy for sustainable development" (CSD-15) - Article II (Youth) in particular, quite compelling.

Next steps

Breakout Meeting - soon! How about sometime in late January, after we have all had some time to educate ourselves a little more about the UN CSD-16 and let our ideas marinate?

Ideas for "inside" involvement (add, comment, correct grammar!)

-As individuals, those interested could take Tom Forster's class at The New School, as a way of preparing ourselves to take part as part of the "Youth" major group.

-As members of Real Food, we could meet periodically in the months and weeks leading up to the CSD-16 to discuss and agree upon issues we find important to bring up for discussion and plan a way to effectively do so. Something to think about: at the conference call on Dec. 4, the discussion had turned to American priority issues for the CSD, and someone mentioned institutional purchasing of local food -- very relevant to our movement. If this ends up becoming a sizeable topic at CSD-16 I think we would definitely have some valuable input to contribute.

-What those two ideas lack: They are very vague! We need to find out more about the way the "Youth" major group works, and how we would get involved with them, what the format of the discussion at the CSD would be and how we would participate on it. Anyone know anything more?

There is now a message board conversation on this subject.

Ideas for "outside" involvement (ditto)

-We could organize a tour of different colleges and their food systems in the NY region for other youth delegates who come to the CSD in order to show them the different ways sustainable food is strived for!

- Adam Brock is organizing Focus the Nation at NYU around how the institution itself is changing/improving its impact on climate change, through NYU's own initiatives. His way of doing this might be a good model for how to present the food initiatives at each of our colleges? Maybe. Talk to him.
